A foreign government has more say over Northern Ireland than the people of Northern Ireland.

It's got to be absolutely clear that people who are going to serve in the government of Northern Ireland have got to have given up violence for good,

It is a victory for those who want fair, accountable and decent government in Northern Ireland, and who don't want to share power with gunmen.

The last thing the people of Northern Ireland need now is an outbreak of recriminations,

This isn't just an award to David Trimble and myself. It's an award to all the people of Northern Ireland and to all the parties that have participated in the peace process and to both governments.

I feel hopeful and confident that the ultimate prize -- stable, inclusive government in Northern Ireland and an unbreakable peace -- will at long last be within our grasp.
