He's humiliated. He feels like he let himself down and everybody else around him down. He cares deeply for his family. He's torn up by what the impact of this will be on them. It's been a nightmare, a horrible ordeal. ... But this is what he believes is the appropriate thing to do.

He had said, "I am a man," and that meant certain things to Juana. It meant that he was half insane and half god. It meant that Kino would drive his strength against a mountain and plunge his strength against the sea. Juana, in her woman's soul, knew that the mountain would stand while the man broke himself; that the sea would surge while the man drowned in it.

What I've thus far reviewed has projected me to the conclusion that's the proper direction to take.

That's going to be the focus -- to come up with a plea agreement. . . . We're going to try to work out a [deal] and ask for some time to get that done.

This has been an extremely difficult day for Jim.
