Literacy is not, as it is considered in our schools, a PORTION of education. It IS education. It is at once the ability AND the inclination of the mind to find knowledge, to pursue understanding, and out of knowledge and understanding, not out of received attitudes and values or emotional responses, however worthy, to make judgments.

Unfortunately, many of our learners wanting to return to mainstream schools in the education system have been subtly or directly refused entry by a number of school principals, who still have the traditional, self-centered attitude of 'I'm in charge'. These people have definitely not moved with the democratic times we live in.

If reflects a sad trend in American education, where suburban schools have become a place to educate the young, and urban schools a place to warehouse the poor.
