All of these companies are piling into this real weird bandwagon. ESB is a problematic term that was sickly in 2005 and I think it's going to die in 2006.

It's not so much sizzle now. There's more meat.

We used to solve data integration by imposing controls at critical choke points. SOA eliminates these choke points, so I now have a data integration problem everywhere. That means every data access point has to be able to transform and manage data.

Going forward, I think there's little incentive for companies to create new IDEs, and even for many companies with proprietary IDEs to continue developing them in the face of what's becoming increasingly and more widely accepted as a 'universal' IDE for non-Microsoft environments.
