Americans want action for their money. They are fascinated by its self-reproducing qualities if it's put to work . . .

A 1999 Lou Harris survey of 1,000 self-employed Americans and small entrepreneurs found that money was not their top motivator. Nine out of 10 respondents said that 'setting their own priorities and independence influenced their decision most' to go out on their own.

Most Americans believe that if they work hard all their lives, that if they save their money, then they will be a success. This has been the formula that America has been built on. Work hard, save your money, be thrifty, do the right thing by other people, and there will be rewards out there. Some people call that the American Dream.
