As a manager, you can't be buddies with your employees. You can't reprimand a best buddy. You must command respect and lead. But you don't want to be inaccessible or feared.

First, you try to avoid bad employees by hiring carefully. If you made a mistake in hiring, then you have to understand why the employee isn't performing well. It can be a lack of training, a poorly defined roll, lack of feedback, shifting organizational priorities or something deeper.

We respect our employees, and we're glad that all of them are coming back on Tuesday.
