Aside from a brief stint as a writing tutor during graduate school, I have managed to avoid respectable employment all my adult life.

As a kid I was deeply curious as to what college life would be like. Now that I am a university professor, I realize that this was a premonition that once I entered college I would never get out, and that my matriculation would turn into some sort of life sentence.

So in my uncertainty, I went to graduate school and there it all happened.

The whole thing reminds me of graduate school seminars, except these people are smart and funny and have something interesting to say.

Graduate school is a place to hide for a couple of years.
