Fortunately, for us the problem had been solved a long time ago by Inuit hunters. They figured out their dogs could smell the seal holes under the snow.

They all knew this, but this didn't stop them from good-naturedly crowding around the front door every time it opened, every single time, despite the fact that they were never -EVER- let into the house. I loved this particularly fine thing about dogs: Despite a lifetime of denied entrance, hope never died in their hearts.

Some dogs take longer to mature. They're kind of freaked out by their first experience. You need to have patience and give them another chance. But some people aren't patient. They'll hook up dogs, take them out and if they don't perform the way they want them to in the first or the second run, they're done with them. They'll just get another dog.

People let their dogs run loose like it's a country area, but the problem is the area is growing. It's irresponsibility.
