He has great political skills and he's an exceptional speaker. And when he finds the right audience, he'll be able to talk about the things he's accomplished when others were struggling. That's leadership. That's impressive.

But sometimes you find that one guy who has just the right intangibles for the job he's in. I think that's Charlie at Notre Dame. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get them back in the national mix again, and I think it'll happen pretty darn fast. When he wound up with the job, I said then, 'This is probably going to be their next Lou Holtz.'

That's not an easy thing to do. And he hasn't done anything to diminish his standing.

He is absolutely credible as a candidate. The hardcore policy wonks and opinion-makers are extremely impressed with him and intrigued by his success.

We don't know for sure. Right now, it doesn't look good.
