Jazz is one of the great, truly native American art forms. Along with the movies, it's probably the art that the rest of the world associates most deeply with America.

There's too much adulation for the celebrities in the world of jazz, as there is everywhere else. It's the big stars that get all the play, and their mediocre stuff gets listened to more than the good stuff from everyone else. I like Miles. I've got 30 or 40 Miles Davis CDs. But I don't need another Miles album.

We are the only major capital city in the world that doesn't have a jazz festival. It's a shame to me. This is the nation's capital. Jazz was invented in this country.
