Hospitals are busy places, and doctors are fallible, and things will fall through the cracks, and they'll fall through the cracks a lot.

We need to continue to find simple, practical, and effective strategies that hospitals and senior doctors can take to reduce sleep deprivation among residents. We also need to continue to study this issue in other types of residents.

For more than 20 years we have known that black Americans receive a different level of care than whites. Despite concerted efforts to address these disparities, this study shows that black seniors continue to receive fewer surgical procedures than whites. On a fundamental level, these differences in care are not acceptable.
