I am always optimistic about independence in East Timor.

After so much suffering, after enduring so much sacrifice, sanctioned and embraced by our people, what is it that the people of East Timor expect as a result of independence?

What concerns me is not the revelation of the truth, which is already common knowledge,

The two governments will do everything to go to a solution with mutual benefit and respecting each other's sovereignty,

This day marks once and for all times the end of our long suffering and today, too, we affirm our sovereignty as a people.

We all have to embrace in national unity ... avoid radicalism and learn politics.
