I asked Kenny to sit in. Richie Furay, Rusty Young and Paul Cotton (from Poco) were there, too.

At that time, I was signed to Columbia Records as an Independent Producer. I spent many weeks forming, auditioning, rehearsing and recording demos for Kenny, who was finally signed to Columbia Records.

So I go to the studio, and just say, 'Hi Paul, it's me, Rusty.' I think I kept it together pretty well, although I was pretty nervous. And before the day is over I'm playing guitar, and there's Paul McCartney over there, playing his Hofner bass and singing. All I can do is think, 'This life is so so bizarre.'

The biggest thing Kenny and I didn't want to do was insult him. We were a little bit nervous about that. We told Steve this right off the top.

It is a lot cheaper to spend eight hours in a rehearsal hall than in a recording studio.

I asked the producer who else is doing the show. And he replied: 'Dorothy Paul, and, of course, McLean.' I said: 'Shirley?' And he said: 'No – Una!'.
