I loved the story of these three characters [Wood's American Jonathan, his Ukrainian interpreter Alex and Alex's grandfather, their driver] on a road trip and the comedy that comes up because of lack of communication,

The subsequent story that follows the wedding leaves us with a lot more to explore with these two characters.

The thing I'd say about that is that if Alex is a hypocrite, then everyone who is American and has parents of different heritage and wants to be respectful of that is a hypocrite, too. If that's being a hypocrite, then I'd want to be one. Alex was thoughtfully considering a difficult decision and was trying to make the right decision for him and his family.

It's fantastic, are you kidding? To sort of be part of this project from the ground up, from the script form, and then for it to kind of do as well as it did in the States in the festivals, and come here; it's fantastic, it's wonderful.

I do think there was an active choice to do something small, as simple as it may sound, just so I didn't have to work on something for 16 months. The idea of two months, nice and contained, just about character, and no time in makeup was a thrill to me.
