I think it's ironic that the way the Chinese government prepares to host the United Nations Commission on Human Rights is by placing dissidents under house arrest.

This won't at all, of course, affect our commitment to human rights issues in and outside of the United Nations. We'll continue to pursue them.

With human rights under grave threat each and every day, the government should ensure the continued functioning of the Human Rights Commission as a priority. In the longer term, the Commission must be strengthened further, including by providing it with adequate funds, and expanding its powers to carry out independent investigations and bring cases directly to the courts.

We are appealing to the United States as a world leader in human rights ... to urge the Chinese government from using force against its people,

We know that the Chinese authorities' views on Taiwan and human rights differ from ours,

In both cases, we want to see clearly what the human rights situation there looks like and how come these incidents took place.
