I think that the way music is used in the film is the way people associate music in their own lives. People use it as a means to contemplation.

When people are on top of each other, they have to find a way to escape. Music is a way to escape.

I would say that as the sound period began, which is when most people consider the gangster film period as beginning to flourish, it was most clearly Warner Brothers, run by Jack Warner and headed by production chief Daryl Zanuck [that made its name with the gangster film],

It's great to watch someone get the most out of what they can do, whether they're a beautiful performer or just a really gritty performer. It's something to behold.
