I took Al Unser out on a Hobie the day before he became the first auto racer to go 200 mph around a closed-circuit track. We were only going about 18 mph, and you should have seen him hanging on for dear life.

In 1969, 'Life' magazine came up to me and said they wanted to do a little story on the Hobie, and I ended up getting a six-page spread. I remember Robert Redford was on the cover, and when that magazine hit the stands, it was a whole new ballgame.

My dad was a professional track racer. It's in my genes, and my first memories as a baby were in a velodrome.

He got away because he stabbed the brakes then took off. He's a great racer, but second is just first loser.

But I do have an idea in my head before I go in about what I'm going to do.

I knew I didn't want to be stuck in Stoke Newington for the rest of my life, hanging about with idiots. That wasn't for me. I wanted to go out and have a look around.
