I wanted to do something that is generous to the whole exhibition. Contemporary art is a bit off-putting to people because they don't know the history. Even the term contemporary art history is oxymoronic.

The idea of the show came about because I had the intuition that faith is also a part of making art. ... There is this notion in the art world that faith is not a part of the territory, and I think that is changing. The storytelling, the materiality of religion is becoming more recognized as a part of making art.

Faith is more complex than belief. It involves an individual's relation to a community and engagement with ideas that are larger than the self.

I played off of minimalism: Donald Judd, Carl Andre. But their work is about the power of industry. Mine makes it domestic.

We work in the dark - we do what we can - we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion, and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art.
