If a man, for private profit, tears at the public news, does so with the impatience of one who thinks he actually owns the news you get, it is against the national interest.

Why something in the public interest such as television news can be fought over, like a chain of hamburger stands, eludes me.

The public interest is not always the same as the national interest. Going to war with people who are not our enemy in places that are not a threat doesn't make us safe, and that applies whether it's in Iraq or on the Internet. The Internet is not the enemy. Our economy is not the enemy.

My belief is that the nation-state remains the one entity that can function, the one entity that can demand sacrifice from its constituents in the national interest.

What governments and people don't realise is that sometimes the collective interest - the international interest - is also the national interest.
