If you're called to audition to be a lawyer, you have to dress the part.

It gives characters the opportunity to pause before a critical confrontation and decide how they are going to play this scene. Sometimes they completely blow it, and sometimes you say all the right things, but to no avail.

I directed '36 Views' (last spring at the Huntington) and we did tons of research on Japanese art and the art world to prepare for that play. But for 'The Real Thing' that isn't necessary. Everyone brings their own experiences because this play is about relationships and figuring out what is the real thing in love.

Our lawyer has called and all of our paperwork was filed correctly. I guess we're going to be sitting with a judge to see how this comes out.

If you get an audition and you're out of work, you just say, 'I've gotta go on this.'
