Independents offer the personal touch. Yesterday, one lady said coming here was like Cheers without the alcohol. Independents are neighborhood hangouts where people go for chitchat and for coffee the way they want it.

The big guys, like Starbucks, paved the way for specialty coffee. Now people are looking to learn more and (want) a wider variety of specialty beans, both single-origins and blends. Five years ago, people would come into the store and ask for something strong or something mild. Now they want Guatemalan Antigua or Brazilian Bourbon.

Why would alcohol companies promote games that involve drinking water? It's preposterous.

While much is known about the college study use of alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana and other illicit drugs, we've not had a handle of the abuse of prescription drugs.

We went there to support her, so that she would feel that her family was there supporting her win or lose.

It was a good experience for me and for her too.
