It doesn't make sense to give a young kid like Hernandez an old man's spot like that this early.

Usually, a young kid would get frustrated with a guy who changes styles like that kid did. Plus, the guy was a (classic) boxer, he had the reach advantage, about 3 or 4 inches on Jose.

All of a sudden, I was a young kid in my early 20s, and I had a couple of Broadway shows to my credit.

My early influences I'd say were, well, just about all the old great masters like Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, naturally Charlie Parker and quite a few others that are still around like Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Illinois Jacquet and of course my great friend Dexter Gordon.

Sometimes you come in with a guy who is unorthodox in a delivery and he'll get you an out. Bring somebody in with a different look and come in with a pitch you don't see everyday.

I think he'll probably throw off the mound soon. Obviously, he's going to have to get off the mound sometime. I just can't tell you exactly when.
