It is the job of the novelist to touch the reader.

That's the novelist's job: to peel back the layers and look underneath.

Lots of people want to have written; they don't want to write. In other words, they want to see their name on the front cover of a book and their grinning picture on the back. But this is what comes at the end of a job, not at the beginning.

The job of the novelist is to invent: to embroider, to color, to embellish, to make things up.

It's definitely part of my job description not to be too fat.

A writer's job is to give the reader a larger vision of the world.
