It's a privilege to be admitted there. And especially when a school is private, they should have the power to choose who is worthy, for a lack of a better word.

Once he started doing stupid stuff, we just didn't hang out with him that much. Kind of left him alone. He was a nice kid, but could be a loose cannon.

Rank does not confer privilege or give power. It imposes responsibility.

This idea that privilege comes with position is something that's terribly antiquated and doesn't belong in a democracy. These are elected officials who chose to serve the public, and the idea of serving the public doesn't include taking gifts from someone who obviously wants something in return.

You don't necessarily have to do anything once you acknowledge your privilege. You don't have to apologize for it. You need to understand the extent of your privilege, the consequences of your privilege, and remain aware that people who are different from you move through and experience the world in ways you might never know anything about. They might endure situations you can never know anything about.
