It's not the way it was when I was growing up. Things have changed.

I was subjected to everything German as a young lad growing up, like traditional songs and talk of the old country. All my German relatives lived in New York City, and we used to visit frequently.

So I'm a young boy in the 1940s growing up, seeing Ralph Bunche on a regular basis, seeing Duke Ellington on a regular basis. We know that these people are famous. They're living in the same community as we live in. They go to the same stores and shops.

I was black growing up in an all-white neighborhood so I felt like I just didn't fit in. Like I wasn't as good as everybody else or as smart, or whatever.

Growing up, Cincinnati was tough, bad, in your face. We're getting it back. Back to the old days.
