John (the Baptist) stands as prophets do to this very day, as an unyielding presence unsettling us and leaving us not quite sure of how we feel about him.

And yet John seems hard to know, hard to like even though we stand back in admiration of him. We react the same way to most absolute figured.

The whole world feels that it knows Francis, not so much because he follows Francis of Assisi but because he is always himself. We have seen him pay his own hotel bill and heard that Francis called Buenos Aires for a pair of ordinary black shoes, like John XXIII, who preferred stout peasant shoes to the traditional papal footwear.

And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

With all due respect for the finger of John the Baptist, the shin of St George most of the holy relics in Christendom pale in importance before the relic of the Holy Blood of Jesus.
