Like most schools, we tried to get it all done as much as possible last week. We had the fog day and had to test Monday.

My next question: What about the McKay scholarships? Those schools don't have any requirements.

UMKC competes not only against KU, Missouri State, some of the local schools that are bigger than UMKC, but we also compete against the Ivies [Ivy League schools]. We compete against Dartmouth, we compete against Harvard and we compete against Berkley.

We give the Terra Nova test so ISTEP is not the first big test they take. Terra Nova tests similar skills so they get that practice in first and second grades. Some children get stressed by it, but if the parents and teachers have the right attitude, they don't get as stressed. We try not to create an environment that would cause that.

Education is an important thing in Pacific Grove. If you go to the schools, you'll see a lot of parents volunteering.

Good schools, good jobs, good government. These are not unreasonable demands. But sadly, some of our people have already lost heart and have left Hawaii to look for these things elsewhere.
