My brother and I used to ride around in a half-ton cattle truck, listening to Waylon, so when he died, my brother told me, 'Man, you've got to do it. I've always wanted to carve him since I've been listening to him. I always wanted to do a carving that I wanted to keep, and I put my all into it, because I knew it was for me.

Page was really hands-on with us. He would be listening to what we were playing and then have us listen to other music to get us inspired. He put in a Stevie Wonder tape and we were like, 'What does this have to do with us?' But after we listened to it for a while, we began to see how things could come together in harmonies and rhythm.

My favorite song is 'I've Always Been Crazy,' because people tell me I'm crazy everything I tell them I want to do something like this. And maybe I am, but that's OK. I do what I want to do, just like Waylon and Shooter.

I've been a fan of Waylon since I was 10, and that's when I started carving, too. I watched my dad whittle, and so I tried it. I basically taught myself; I went to a few shows and asked a few questions, but I never took a class.

You cannot truly listen to anyone and do anything else at the same time.

We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we say.
