My parents had their problems with alcohol, but they did provide for our family. In talking about my mom and dad, I've never, ever called them drunks. Were they alcoholics, yes.

A lot of parents think it's a difficult subject, talking to their kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. They don't know what to say, when to say it and where to begin. So they end up starting too late.

I was fortunate to come from a family that never had those problems. My parents were able to fully support me, and so did Charles Martin. I can't just be here and see what's going on, and not do anything.

They said that they could smell the alcohol on your breath. They could tell by the way you were talking and by the way you were walking.

It's unbelievable that wherever I go, people still want to talk about that race. It beat me up more than any other race in my life.

Because of that race we will always be joined at the hip, but we've really gotten to know each other and become good friends only in the last six years. Before that, when we saw each other, we were always very cordial, but I think we were uncomfortable around each other.
