Nuclear power can never be made inherently safe. There is always a danger. But there's also always a danger with any form of electricity generation. The goal is to have that risk managed to an acceptably low level.

The process has to be methodical. We deal with inherently hazardous materials. If we're not safe, we've got trouble.

We must not let ourselves be swept off our feet in horror at the danger of nuclear power. Nuclear power is not infinitely dangerous. It's just dangerous, much as coal mines, petrol repositories, fossil-fuel burning and wind turbines are dangerous.

Design is inherently optimistic. That is its power.

Nuclear power is not a miracle key for the future.

This was the closest near miss to an event since Three Mile Island. It was also a prolonged period of bad behavior. The company's fine is entirely appropriate.
