One commonality with modern celebrations is that they would have a 'designated driver' who was supposed to stay sober throughout the event to make sure that others were taken care of.

If a guy's got a designated driver, go ahead and let him get toasted.

Make sure there's a designated driver or get a cab. Never drink alone or on an empty stomach and don't drink to get drunk. People say that takes the fun out of drinking but that's the rule that psychiatrists and substance abuse programs use.
