One of the things my family taught me - I think very important in religion and science - is that you must be ready to stand up for what you think. Decide what you really think is best, and stick with it.

There's so many ways to do stand up, and I think for awhile, people weren't really maximizing the freedom of it.

Religion teaches you to try be able to stand up for what you believe in, even if other people don't agree with you, and that's important in science, ... That's happened on many number of occasions when that was a new idea in science and many people object to it and think it's crazy, especially if you're entering a new field. You have to think hard about 'Well, can you be right and if you're right be willing to differ with other people.'

You can't manage by memo. You can't stand up there and just send out edicts. I think you just gotta really personalize your relationships.
