Our first responsibility is to protect the American people and we cannot put on blinders to expect that everyone who seeks asylum does so in good faith.

We cannot gamble with American lives. I will not gamble with American lives.

We cannot erase what has been done. We can apologize for it. We can express our outrage. We can say to the American people and to the people of the world, this is not our way and we do not condone it, but we cannot change it and we cannot erase it.

Of course, Americans have no monopoly of patriotic enthusiasm and good faith.

The American people expect and deserve a government that works and leaders who work together.
