Our focus on culture is obvious, ... We must ensure we do have an atmosphere in all our schools such that students can learn and teachers can teach.

We do have uniforms in 52 schools,

Being a Black American man, I don't think (public schools) taught me enough about my culture. Even today the textbooks are lacking.

Now, we're one of the smaller schools in the division. We've been second, third, or fourth places mostly.

The focus of the program is to totally immerse them in American culture.

There were two stages to this affair, at first we were demonstrating against all serious culture. The focus changed tremendously as my interest in politics developed. I was meeting people who were calling my attention to issues of socialism, which I'd never really thought about.
