People like to think of cultural judgment as having some kind of pure form, but I don't believe that it does. I think that prizes and awards shows function as a staging ground within the messiness and complexity of cultural judgment. [While] everyone remembers the Pia Zadora scandal, and even now the Golden Globes have the identity of being the most bogus of awards shows, that doesn't make them less legitimate than the others.
