Politicians have no role in these tragic experiences except to protect our fundamental right to privacy. These are the ideals and values I fought when I stood up on what has proven to be the most shameful days I experienced in Congress.

While Roberts wanted to give the impression he respected the right to privacy and the precedent of Roe vs. Wade, his answers look dangerously similar to the responses (Associate Justice) Clarence Thomas gave senators during his confirmation hearings 14 years ago.

[It was the same story when Roberts was asked whether he believed in a person's right to privacy, a cornerstone of Roe v. Wade.] Senator, I do. The right to privacy is protected under the Constitution in various ways, ... matters of conscience.

It sounds like something Rehnquist would have written. William Rehnquist didn't believe there is a right to privacy either.

[For the justices, Roe reflected earlier cases involving the right to privacy. That] right, ... broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.
