Offensively, he got better as he went on through the minor leagues, but from day one he could catch it. He's the guy you wanted the ball hit to with two outs and the game on the line.

Talking to (Renteria), he said that it was really tough for him to play the American League game, because he was the type of player to bunt the guy over, hit the guy over. In St. Louis, that was appreciated. St. Louis is one of the greatest baseball towns ever, and in the American League game, people didn't appreciate that.

I went home and got a tennis ball and started tossing it against a wall in my back yard to catch the rebounds. I'd go out there every day and throw that ball against a wall until I was catching every ball that bounced back. That's how I learned.
