Salinger is a master of the memorable detail, the seemingly random gesture, the debris of mundane daily operations, the stuff that is left out of any analysis.

Just look at the debris removal. Look at all the stuff that's been removed and think about what it was in the days after the storm around here. It looked like a bomb had exploded.

What we are doing is unheard of in the history of recovery operations. I searched for space shuttle debris for 17 days, but I've never searched house to house in a city this size.

Computers will be able to do all the mundane tasks in our daily lives.
