Scouting is the only program I know of that teaches young men leadership, specifically leadership, and it's fun.

My mom was really my first scout leader. If it weren't for women, we wouldn't have the leadership that we need.

We had done a good job scouting them. Our focus all week was on Keokuk, but this was a fun game. It was almost bigger to the community than it was to us. Things are just going our way right now.

More opportunity now, because you don't have to get federal approval. I graduated from Lafayette High School. We had three black students. I got a great education. My sons are getting a better education, because they're learning more about the world around them.

We've never really felt psychologically that we have control over our school system. It stifles initiative, it stifles enthusiasm.

A strong public education system is just essential to business and economic growth. We've been focused on desegregation for 41 years. Now, we get to focus on the next step. It's up to us to do it. No one has a big stick standing over us. I always find that voluntary efforts are the most fruitful - plus, we have no excuses.
