She followed in her mother's footsteps. She graduated with honors in high school and college and taught first and second grade in San Antonio 40 years.

She and her mom were so involved with kids, she decided the bulk of it would go to the children's hospital. She wanted to make sure it helped children.

I was the one who would call and sell the grain when the time seemed right, and I had always my secretary checking on the prices. Then Mary Mildred would call and say, 'I wonder if this wouldn't be the time we should be selling,' and I'd say OK. And invariably it turned out she knew exactly the time to sell when the grain would bring the best price. I don't know how she did it, but it worked out every time.

She was one very nice lady. She was the last member of a family with roots in Iowa. It was a family of some wealth. She lived comfortably here, but it was never flaunted.

When you?re in high school, you think college is a huge step away. Then you come here and you realize that you can play here. Now everything is kind of sinking in.

College is a big difference than playing in high school. Here, everyone is as good as you are. I didn't really start until after the first five games of the season.
