Slavery is not the only question which comes up in this controversy. There is a far more important one to you, and that is, what shall be done with the free negro?

Anybody can decide a question if only a single principle is in controversy.

There are only two sides to this question. Every man must be for the United States or against it. There can be no neutrals in this war; only patriots and traitors.

But there’s no such thing as free. There are only different and more horrible ways to be enslaved.

When you're riding, only the race in which you're riding is important.

There is not only no free state which would now establish it, but there is no slave state, which, if it had had the free alternative as we now have, would have founded slavery.
