Social Security, all public and no option, rescued older Americans from living their final years in poverty.

In 1935, the year Social Security was created, the poverty rate for seniors was over 70%.

Without Social Security, poverty rates for African American seniors would more than double.

Social Security not only helps Americans enjoy a secure retirement, it has also kept millions of Americans out of poverty.

I don't know of any bills we have. My pension and Social Security aren't huge, but between them we do nicely. We don't require a whole lot.

So there is a bookkeeping way to say that I am not using the Social Security cash flow, but the overall effect on the taxpayer and the economy is the same. The government is borrowing additional net money.
