The Army is made up of over a million people. Just like in the civilian world, there is going to be things like suicide or homicide or terrible accidents or illness.

The Army does not want to make people who have a true religious or moral or ethical reservation about killing other humans to be forced to do that.

Some people are very family-oriented and reserve units are in their communities, whereas regular army bases are often in remote or far-away parts of the country. And then there's the whole notion of deploying overseas, which can be unattractive.

We have a vigorous suicide prevention program. Everyone at least once is trained to recognize the warning signs and council people who are troubled. We work and have for many years on that.

AKO, while it is a great tool for the Army, it is not unique in the Web world. We do represent the U.S. Army. We get attention on the Web that others don't get. We need to keep that in mind.

The people of the Texarkana area have again demonstrated what teamwork can accomplish, ... They proved that the Red River Army Depot is far too great an asset to the nation to close. This is the result of strong local leadership and an unselfish dedication to a goal.
