As a student in London, I had seen so many shows, so many plays and had seen so many greats of the day.

Think of the contrast. Brixton in the 1870s. Dark, smoky, foggy London, the opposite of what we associate with Van Gogh's art: the bright colors and the sunny, open scenes in Provence.

That's a little weird to me. Why would you be taking photos if nothing happened? Were they being taken to set up a defense?
