The crucial job of artists is to find a way to release materials into the animated middle ground between subjects, and so to initiate the difficult but joyful process of human connection.

It's not about having things figured out, or about communicating with other people, trying to make them understand what you understand. It's about a chicken dinner at a drive-in. A soft pillow. Things that don't need explaining.

Art is the distortion of an unendurable reality... Art is correction, modification of a situation; art is communication, connection... Art is social, self-sufficient, and total.

Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide.

Anyone who says you can't see a thought simply doesn't know art.

Our ability to connect with others is innate, wired into our nervous systems, and we need connection as much as we need physical nourishment.
