The doubts ached in my bones like the deadening crawl of an icy night, and my gun trembled from my unsteady arm.

There's definitely nothing wrong in having a lot of doubts, but having nothing to doubt a definitely wrong person by a lot of people is.

The choice lay out for me. Stay on land or plunge into the icy depths of the sea.

I always chose the sea.

That none discussed their doubts, that they assumed everyone else was just having a grand time of it and felt at ease and enjoying the ride, was perhaps the most toxic element to this particular kind of noisy loneliness.
