The human rights community has focused very narrowly on political and civil rights for many decades, and with reason, but now we have to ask how can we broaden the view.

I support the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

To cheapen the lives of any group of men, cheapens the lives of all men, even our own. This is a law of human psychology, or human nature. And it will not be repealed by our wishes, nor will it be merciful to our blindness.

Then we can say at least the civil rights community tried to alert you.

No Republican questions or disputes civil rights. I have never wavered in my support for civil rights or the civil rights act.

Not state importance, but civil importance!
