The mattress standard is an important step forward for consumer safety. A reasonable standard for upholstered furniture, which has been under development for many years, now appears to be imminent. We could see the culmination of these efforts result in regulations that would address the significant number of deaths and injuries that continue to occur each year due to furniture-related fires.
