The military has targeted a vulnerable group of young people. We send our children to school to get an education, not to become military targets.

I do the best I can for school children.

It's to get the education out there to dispel the myth that everybody is doing it. (Middle school-aged children) have the misconception that everybody in middle school drinks. It is not the social norm. That is what we're trying to get across to them.

In any classroom, all children are not on the same level, ... When I was a high school teacher, I stood in front of the class and taught algebra. But I learned before I left that I had to walk down the aisles and look at each person's paper and see what each person is doing. That's my philosophy. You teach individuals, you don't teach algebra.

We're going to look back at Katrina as a turning point. We need the military, because of its extraordinary capabilities, to be ready to play a much more active role. I don't think it's going to be that difficult from a congressional point of view.

People say throwing money at the system isn't going to solve it, but in education, they're wrong. We need more money.
