The relations between Egypt and Nubia were incredibly complex. To the Egyptians, at various times, Nubia represented a trading partner, an enemy in war, a supplier of troops, a conquered colony and even a conqueror.

If the Resource Center wants a dialogue for reconciliation or to find common ground, this is not the guy to do it. It's like throwing a match on gasoline. We would prefer he had never been invited because he doesn't add much to the debate.

We're not going to burn down an embassy. We feel it's part of our responsibility to inform the public about who they're dealing with.

The Oriental Institute has played a key role in the exploration of ancient Nubia. As early as 1905, James Henry Breasted, the founder of the institute, led two expeditions to Nubia, where he was one of the first modern researchers to document the monuments, sites and inscriptions of this ancient civilization.
